#France Still Plans to Demand UN Rapporteur Albanese’s Removal Despite Fact-Check Debunking FM’s Misinformation

More than 150 former ministers, ambassadors, diplomats & senior officials accused French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot of spreading disinformation by citing a digitally altered version of #UN Special Rapporteur #FrancescaAlbanese’s remarks to call for her resignation.

Independent fact-checkers found
@FranceskAlbs
 did not call Israel an “enemy of humanity,” and the accusation rested on doctored video, amplified by UN Watch, a group that seeks to discredit UN work with misinformation, and its executive director
@HillelNeuer
. The coalition urged France to retract its statements, reaffirm UN mandate independence, and protect multilateral institutions amid ICJ genocide proceedings on Gaza.

“By publicly calling for the resignation of an independent UN expert on the basis of unfounded claims, the authorities risk weakening UN mechanisms, spreading disinformation, and fostering hostility that could endanger the rapporteur’s safety,” they added.

Despite criminal complaints lodged against the FM by French legal groups, Minister
@jnbarrot
 once again doubled down on the misinformation in parliament today, claiming he had nothing to apologize for or retract about statements he made about Albanese on February 11.

France still plans to officially demand Albanese's resignation or removal at the UN Human Rights Council session scheduled on February 23, 2026. A Foreign Ministry contact directed us to a Twitter thread circulated by the ministry compiling social media posts by Albanese, mostly from 2014 and some from 2023, presented as evidence against
