https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/education/2026/02/19/543867/ut-system-votes-to-limit-controversial-topics-in-class-raising-concerns-about-academic-freedom/

Once upon a time, I was so proud to have taught philosophy at #UT. Now, I’m begging people to not come to #Texas for school. Just like it’s not safe for anyone to visit the USA, it is not safe to attempt an education in a state controlled by #YeeHawdists.

The UT System passed new restrictions Thursday that limit how “controversial topics” can be taught in the classroom, raising concerns about the rigor and quality of #education students will receive.

The new policy comes as #gop state leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, exercise increased influence on Texas’ public universities to eradicate what they see as liberal bias on campuses.

The entire purpose of a university is to teach and argue and contest information. If you are not pushing past what we already know, you are failing as an educator.

UT system votes to limit ‘controversial topics’ in class, raising concerns about academic freedom

It's the latest move in the Texas higher education systems for the state to have more control over what is taught at public universities.

@MissConstrue I can assure you that many Texas A&M personnel are mortified by the bizarre restrictions being placed on undergraduate philosophy courses.

@jsc It could be contained if they hadn’t deregulated the university system and allowed UT and A&M to buy almost every other university, including the HBUs. I think my Alma mater, TWU may be one of the last standing that hasn’t been assimilated by the Borg.

When they deregulated they said it was to lower prices and make school affordable for all. When I went to university, it was $4.00 a credit hour. With fees and summer classes, taking a double major with labs, 18 hour load, cost me $5k a year. Tuition at UT now, 12 hour load; 35k per year. Deregulation sure was good for the students.

@MissConstrue

So, no Plato then?

To be fair, Plato *is* controversial.

To be even more fair, that's kind of the point.

@weekend_editor I posted something a little while back about how Plato was being banned at Texas A&M. It's utter Dark Age madness.
