Yesterday in Oaxaca, a federal court ruled partially in favor of Mazatec anarchist Miguel Peralta, who is facing a 50-year sentence for trumped-up charges of murder for his role in the defense of the autonomy of his community of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón.

The court ruled that the evidence and accusations made against Miguel, who has been battling these charges in and outside of prison for more than ten years and is now in hiding, were false. That is an important step.

But in cowardly fashion, rather than ordering an end to this charade and ruling in favor of Miguel's freedom, they deferred the matter to a lower state court to rule on the same material and issue a final verdict. Thus, Miguel remains in limbo with his freedom dependent on the more corrupt state court of Oaxaca.

Over the phone, Miguel said after the ruling, "Once again, it has been confirmed that justice, for our peoples and even more so for the community of Eloxochitlán, is given to us in crumbs. We have no other choice but to continue our resistance, to continue fighting for freedom, until we take it from them."

Today in Labor History February 21, 1934: Augusto Cesar Sandino, Nicaraguan independence fighter, was assassinated by Somoza’s Nation Guard. While in exile in Mexico during the early 1920s, Sandino participated in strikes led by the IWW. Inspired by the anarcho-syndicalist union, he adopted their red and black logo as the colors for the revolutionary Nicaraguan flag. The Sandinistas, or FSLN, who overthrew the dictator, Anastasio Somoza, in 1979, were named for Sandino.

The #Constitution gives #Congress the #power to levy #tariffs. But the #Trump administration argued that a 1977 #law allowing the president to regulate importation during “emergencies” also allows him to set tariffs. Other presidents have used the law dozens of times to impose #sanctions, but Trump was the first president to invoke it for #import #taxes.

#Trump set what he called “reciprocal” #tariffs on most countries in April 2025 to address #trade #deficits that he declared a “national emergency”. Those came after he imposed extra #duties on #Canada, #China & #Mexico, ostensibly to address a “drug trafficking” “emergency”.
A series of lawsuits followed, including a case from a dozen largely Democratic-leaning #states & others from small #businesses selling everything from plumbing supplies to educational toys to women’s cycling apparel.

A Call for Solidarity with the People of Cuba

The capitalist storm continues to spread throughout the world, leaving death, destruction, and misery in its wake. The bombs that were dropped on Venezuela a few weeks ago, and that continue to destroy Gaza, are now headed toward Cuba. Big Capital’s war of reconquest knows no borders, no limits… and no international law.

The Cuban people, who have endured more than 60 years of economic, political, and military aggression from the US government, are now being pushed to the breaking point. Without shame, those who impose war on the world from above declare their objectives: to suffocate the Cuban people in order to promote investment and “development.”

The “New Gaza” project, presented at the meeting of the wealthy and powerful in Davos, is in reality a declaration of principles: to destroy and depopulate different regions of the world, to be rebuilt and reorganized by and for capital.

On the island of Cuba, big capital intends to establish a new “Little Saint James,” Jeffrey Epstein’s island where the world’s powerful had their moral sanctuary of degradation. Capital does not want freedom, but slavery for the delight of tourists.

But the dignified people of Cuba know how to resist; they have resisted the world’s greatest military power for more than 60 years and have also inflicted significant defeats upon it. We support the Cuban people, and we call on the peoples of the world to demonstrate their solidarity and to prevent the suffocation of the Cuban people.

The capitalist system has all of humanity as its enemy. Any expression of resistance, rebellion, or freedom is and will be attacked until extermination. The so-called “new international order” is built on the corpse of humanity.

Far from the fads and posturing of the “progressive” intelligentsia that supports the implementation and return of slavery in their tourist paradises in a world that is crumbling, solidarity among the peoples resisting the aggressions of capitalism is necessary and urgent.

Cuba will survive, Venezuela will survive, Palestine will survive, Iran will survive.

Resistance and rebellion will endure.
