#PennedPossibilities 937 — Which of your characters is the most controversial? Why?

Hands down, it’s Isma. He tortured women for the fun of it. Women, in his eyes, especially the mortal ones (but also the immortal ones), are meant to be subservient to men. Nah, f*ck that. Needless to say, he’s a piece of garbage.

Female oppression is a big theme in this story.

#PennedPossibilities 938 — MC POV: What is your favorite work of art? What do you love about it?

(I’m going out later, so I’ll post this one early.)

Alistair: Fenella is a work of art in my eyes. She’s beautiful. I love everything about her, and that includes the terrible bits, of which there are plenty. That’s what love feels like. It’s accepting someone for who and what they are. She’s picturesque, and I love painting her, even if I feel as if I’m never quite able to capture her beauty on a canvas. You’ll find art around the castle that I’ve created for her over the years. It hangs proudly from the walls. That’s the work of art that comes to mind for me.

#EroticMusings 37 — Does any of your erotica take place during festivals or cultural celebrations? Why do / don't you include such events in your work?

Ironically, yes. All Hallow's Eve plays a major role in this story. For the paranormal creatures, it's an important time to year. I enjoy creating or including pre-existing "holidays," festivals, or celebrations in my stories.

#EroticMusings 38 — One-Word Prompt: Mount.

Here's a little something...

#WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon #WingsOfQuietLonging #ParanormalRomance #Fantasy #Victorian #Gothic #Vampires #Werewolves

“Mount the bloody horse, love,” Alistair pleaded. “We need to at least try and appear mortal. We have to be careful here. If you go running through the woods, what do you think the local farmers will say about that?”
Fenella groaned. “Fine, fine. You do make a good point.”
Chuckling, Alistair held the reins for her. “You’ll survive, I promise.”
“I’ve mounted worse things,” she teased mercilessly, sparing him a glance. He withered beneath that look from her. A moment later, she took pity on him. “And far better ones as well.”
The sharp inhale was unmistakable. Her ears were attuned to him. She fought the urge to grin as she stuck a booted foot in the stirrup and rose. As she settled on the horse, she spied him already watching her. “See, darling,” she began, “you’re rather easy to play with.”
Slipping into his own saddle, he sighed. “Whatever you say.”

#PennedPossibilities 936 — Tell us about something that disgusts your MC.

Mortals AKA humans without a set of morals. Vampires without morals. Werewolves without morals. You get the gist. Alistair is easy to pin. That, and the oppression of women. He talks about it a lot throughout the story. Everyone needs a set of principles that include fairness, respect, empathy, responsibility, and honesty. They need beliefs and standards that guide their behavior by distinguishing right from wrong. We know it’s often influenced by culture, religion, and upbringing, but it’s still a sense of right and wrong. Those who don’t have that capacity and couldn’t care less (like Duncan) will never be among those who *deserve* to live, survive, and thrive.

#WordWeavers 2.20 — What tropes are in your current project?

Fantastic question. Let me list a few of the tropes.

• Second-Chance Romance: Two former lovers reconnect after a long separation and have another chance at love. Here Fenella and Alistair have a chance to try again.
• Lovers to Friends to Lovers: This goes along with the above trope, of course.
• Fake Dating/Relationship: Our two characters pretend to be in a relationship for convenience, only to fall in love (or back in love again). Fenella and Alistair have to pretend to be back together for her sake and her safety. Incoming slowburn...
• First Love: They're vampires, older than you could ever know, and he's never loved anyone else, only Fenella.
• Grumpy Old Men: This one is self-explanatory, and it perfectly describes our dear Alistair.

#WordWeavers 2.18 — Can your MC carry a tune?

He can, actually. Hati and Fenella know this. He plays piano and sometimes you'll catch him humming or singing along. He has a nice voice. (I should include this in the story more than I already have. There's an idea!)

#WordWeavers 2.16 — If your MC had a statue put up in their honor, what would it be for?

It would be a statue of a moth, in honor of love, perseverance, and kindness. Moths are important to vampires, which I've gone into depth about before. That's wishful thinking, though, because other vampires don't approve of his behavior. He doesn't kill, and he happily mingles with mortals and werewolves. It's all taboo.

#WordWeavers 2.15 — Describe your MC’s eyes.

Alistair (in my mind, anyway) has a very specific face-claim. It's #PeterCapaldi. I'll need to mention his features and stuff, then I'll get to the eyes.

Alistair's face: I see hawkish features, laugh lines and wrinkles, kind eyes, soft expressions, and curls that are graying yet still brown at the nape of his neck. When he's in a dark mood, on the rare occasion, his expressions are pure stone and even harder to read. The eyes will match.

Alistair's eyes: His eyes are interesting. All vampires have varying shades of color depending on their mood.

When relaxed, when they're a soft, pale green. Here: "His irises were a washed green, as if the color had been stirred with smoke and sunlight." Or this one: "His eyes were green pools, edged with shadows that made you wonder what he’d seen."

When angry, they're a thunderous, crackling silver or gray. Here: "His gaze was smoke, soft but dangerous, curling into every space you left unguarded." Or even this one: "He blinked, and it was thunder held back, a promise of something breaking open."

I'll include some pictures and explain things in the alt text.

#WordWeavers 2.14 — Who does your antagonist care about?

To answer this one about Isma would be a major spoiler, so let's go with Duncan on this one. The answer is himself. He cares for no one else. He's selfish, nasty, narcissistic, and sadistic. He's a murder. You can absolutely say that not only is he one of the antagonists but he's a true villain.

#PennedPossibilities 935 — What are your writing goals for 2026?

For me, it’s really quite simple. I just want to finish and publish “Wings of Quiet Longing” for all the world to buy, read, and enjoy. At least, for now, you can read it over on AO3 as I’m proofreading, editing, and posting new chapters. That’s fun.

Aside from that, I want to post some new stories for friends that I’ve been working on lately. They’re the kinds of gifts that I love to give. Just cute, sweet, or smexy stories for Doctor Who, Criminal Record, The Thick of It, The Hour, etc. That’s a treat for me.

My overall impression of "The Last Philosopher" was not what I had expected it to be. As previously mentioned, Fantasy is not my go-to genre. So, going into this story, I was not entirely sure what to expect. Was this story going to be as painfully slow as what "The Hobbit" was? Or was this one of those rare times where I actually found myself enjoying a story of the Fantasy genre? I even enjoyed looking at the pictures that were added to each chapter.

"The Last Philosopher" is a story I would recommend to other readers on here to go read and share with their friends, relatives, frenemies, or anyone that could use a good read. Even if you are like me and have a specific genre you are drawn to, I would recommend you give "The Last Philosopher" a try. I found myself to be progressively more interested as the chapters continued. East really does do well with descriptions of chapters without there being much dialogue included.
