Global warming must peak below 2°C and return under 1.5°C as rapidly as possible to limit the risk of triggering dangerous and often irreversible "tipping points" in Earth's natural systems.

Greenhouse gas emissions continue to decline in the EU!

From 2013 to 2024, greenhouse gas emissions from the EU economy decreased by 20% while its gross value added increased by 20%.

The biggest reductions came from:
⬇️ Energy sector: -49%
⬇️ Mining and quarrying: -37%
⬇️ Manufacturing: -18%

We’re moving in the right direction and showing that climate action and economic growth can go hand-in-hand.

The text reads: “EUROPE UP, EMISSIONS DOWN,” with the European Union flag in white in the upper right corner.

@EUCommission
If you want to keep moving in the right direction, please do not turn the ongoing #simplification into #deregulation. This would be dismantling #environmental safeguards established over decades through democratic processes and grounded in clear scientific evidence, which underpin the #EU’s legal obligation to ensure a high level of #nature protection.

As you mention yourself, #climate action and economic #growth can go hand-in-hand.

SpaceX filed an application with the US Federal Communications Commission for a megaconstellation of up to one million #satellites to power data centres in #space.

The proposal envisions satellites operating between 500 and 2,000 kilometres in low Earth #orbit. Some of the orbits are designed for near-constant exposure to sunlight.

The approval process for these satellites focuses almost entirely on the limited technical info companies have to submit to regulators.

Cultural, spiritual, and most #environmental impacts aren’t taken into account – but they should be.

At this scale of growth, the night #sky will change permanently and globally for generations to come.

In 2021, astronomers estimated that in less than a decade, 1 in every 15 points of light in the night sky would be a moving satellite. That estimate only included the 65 000 #megaconstellation satellites proposed at the time.

Once deployed at a scale of millions, the impacts on the night sky may not be easily reversed.

Too many satellites? Earth’s orbit is on track for a catastrophe – but we can stop it

Cultural, spiritual, and most environmental impacts aren’t taken into account when launching thousands of satellites.

The Treasury wants technical and market based solutions. Economists are only too happy to advise.

But what if the problem doesn’t require money - it actually requires time or a change of practice.

These kind of approaches should be considered equally, but you have to consider that the Treasury is the most powerful organ of government.

The power of the Chancellor and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury is too often overlooked in this country, because the holders tend not to be charismatic.

‘Overall, technological advances were rated highest and non-violent civil disobedience lowest.

#Economists rated market-based solutions and technological advances higher than environmental researchers.

#Environmental researchers rated degrowth of the global economy and non-violent civil disobedience higher than economists.’
