I think I'll give up on trying to set up WooCommerce. Anybody recommend anything I can use as a shop plugin, primarily for digital downloads of ebooks and audio books off a wordpress site? Preferably on the lower side of cost (or free if viable) as I wouldn't want to strain my pockets at start up phase!

Edit: I settled for WP eStore Plugin, has all the features I need, and it's a one-off payment of about $40. So now setting up my book store.

@dilmandila easy digital downloads. Or gravity forms with a payment add on.

@dilmandila while I don't know WooCommerce all that well, what was the issue with getting it set up?

@dilmandila ah right. That's a shame. The quick play I've had with Woo seemed fairly positive. I'm quite happy to ask a Wordpress Dev friend of mine in case there's a simple way to extend.

@dilmandila are you still looking for a solution to this problem? I may have a snippet that could be useful.

@dilmandila So what I've had through from a WP dev friend was that you need to do something similar with SVGs and that WP is restricting the file types.

The below would need amending to use the right mime type for epub, or whatever format you're using.

```
add_filter('upload_mimes', 'custom_upload_mimes');
function custom_upload_mimes($mimes) {
$mimes['svg'] = 'image/svg+xml';
return $mimes;
}
```

@GeeBee I've never fiddled with it, but I'll give this a shot. Thanks!

@GeeBee I just spent two days trying to add this or that plugin to customise it. Biggest issue is not accepting ebook formats as product, only pdf. I can't find a cheap/free solution. I found a plugin called "ebook store" , which is affordable with a one off payment, but it integrates poorly with Woo, and while it works well as a standalone, with great features, after more than 5 years it has only about 400+ installs while owner site has lots of not-working menu items, which is worrying.

@dilmandila

I'm quite happy with PayHip, actually. UK-base, free (they take a percentage), easy to set up.

No integration to your website, but you can personalize the store.

I hope that helps.

@dilmandila If it's just a few items and you have a paypal account, you can easily make a per item link to purchase that via paypal.

kofi is cheap to use as a shoping cart. Flat $99usd/yr with no fees or a per sale fee if you want to go that route.

Both options here are about a 5-10 min setup total.

@retech Doesn't the paypal option require manual sending of products?

I hadn't thought of ko-fi, will look into it! Though trying to avoid accumulating annual bills. Already have a ton of essential subscriptions for email, hosting, plugins, etc, and that comes to almost $700/yr so don't want to add more. But will explore it, though I can't find a link/plugin for the cart. Only the donate option.

@dilmandila I had to set up an e-store for someone who was selling PDFs within a WordPress site. We ended up using Easy Digital Downloads, and if I recall it was a free plan and satisfactory and much simpler to configure. Admittedly, this was a few years ago.

@angst_ridden Their cheapest plan currently is about $200/yr, so a bit on the steeper end. Its the kind of money to pay if the store is up and running with good sales 😊

@dilmandila yikes! That is a lot. I’m not sure how we set up a free version - maybe they discontinued that option. I apologize for wasting your time 😫

@cyberia @angst_ridden Ah thanks! Let me look at it and see if it can work fine. I'm geographically excluded from Stripe, so can't use anything with it as an option.

@dilmandila depends on what you’re doing, i have a bunch of extra plugins for accepting payments and one for formatting invoice emails. Nothing all that fancy.
