This is something I truly appreciate in @Firlefanz 's work.
The original study that came up with the Alpha male theory has been long debunked, even by the biologist who wrote it. He initially observed a group of wolves in captivity. Wolves who weren't related to each other, just chucked into the same cramped space. The whole idea of the hierarchy is just wrong. Wolf packs are families.

It's tragic and honestly pathetic how this theory is still being held up in modern bro culture. It's using a debunked theory from the 1970s on wolves in captivity as an excuse for being a douchebag today.
As much as some might long for an innate superiority that matches their poisonous egos, we humans do not have alpha males, and that hierarchy is just a sad delusion.

Maybe the original study, being based on captive wolves yet so accurately describing the behavior of tech bros, implies that tech bros - despite their posing and posturing as self-made and independent men - are really just captives in cages?

I can see a comparison with humans on a plane. Loads of unrelated humans in a cramped space, forced to endure each other...
I suppose you could see it as the tech bros being held captive by their own insecurities. Ultimately, I think that's the most common cause of a warped ego. It does make me wonder how many bros are failing to get the mental health support they need because of this theory.
@HeliaXyana But even on that plane, everyone aboard basically knows that it'll be over soon, and that they are on that plane for some meaningful purpose.
Ah, very true. Perhaps it's more an alien abduction where we're chucked into a zoo. No one knows what's going on, you don't know anyone, and you're at the mercy of this weird other species.
@HeliaXyana Yeah, that's probably a better comparison, actually. That plus you can't communicate with this other species *at all*.
