There's an interesting long-form article today about the build-up to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2026/feb/20/a-war-foretold-cia-mi6-putin-ukraine-plans-russia

The main thing that stands out is how in denial governments were that Putin would actually do this. Makes one wonder if they are similarly in denial about Trump's intentions?

"For many, the key intelligence lesson from Ukraine was stark: do not rule things out, just because they might once have seemed impossible."

(Also interesting how deluded Putin was in assessing the military reality. He had no idea how weak Russian forces were or how strongly Ukrainians would resist him.)

A war foretold: how the CIA and MI6 got hold of Putin’s Ukraine plans and why nobody believed them

Drawing on more than 100 interviews with senior intelligence officials and other insiders in multiple countries, this exclusive account details how the US and Britain uncovered Vladimir Putin’s plans to invade, and why most of Europe – including the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy – dismissed them

@FediThing Had they already forgotten the slightly earlier invasion of Georgia?

@LillyHerself

...and the earlier invasion of Ukraine too! Crimea was already occupied by Putin although apparently it was by slightly more hybrid-like means with proxy forces.
