On International Mother Language Day, we celebrate the rich linguistic and cultural diversity that defines our Union, as well as the importance of protecting and promoting mother tongues across Europe.
The EU is home to:
🌍 24 official languages
🎉 60 regional or minority languages spoken by 40 million people
Multilingualism is a founding principle of our Union and part of what makes our continent so vibrant.
This diversity is our strength.

Each country has its own policies to manage other languages, most of the time the minority language keeps waning. It's not an EU thing.
I don'd want to be so bad with the EU, don't miss undertand me, I'm a fan of EU work because it seems like it's is going to somewhere.
I only want to give you this advice, Suharto was a politician that unified the language of a serie of litle islands and it's necesary to face:
Canada.
United Estates.
Russia.
Kazakhistan.
As one great power in this 21 Century.

It's funny, that you post this in #English and solely in English. Which is the official language only in two member nations, #Irelande and #Malta, and even there second to #Irish and #Maltese.
I know, that my #Basque and #Catalan friends will not be happy: But how about declaring #Spanish THE official language of the #EU? It is the second largest language in number of native speakers after #Mandarin, and it's nine times the native speakers of English in the EU.
Hi @kinkkong! We are dedicated to diversity and multilingualism. However, this particular social media page is in English because, for practical reasons, it is not feasible to do it in all 24 official EU languages.

It would be really nice if more EC representatives, and other EU institutions and programs have active accounts on libre, global social media, like many in #Fediverse 🥰
@EUCommission @kinkkong i aquest és el truc. Ens ha de representar Espanya, que minoritza el nostre idioma (que no és minoritari, però està miniritzat) i nosaltres que el giram en nom del negoci i el turisme.
És que no és pràctic, millor ho feim tot en anglès, un idioma sense cap país que el reprrsenti dins l'EU. Perfecte. Meravellós.

@EUCommission Muttersprache ist ok. Aber ich muss nicht überall meine Vatersprache sprechen sondern kann auch die Sprache meines Wohnortes lernen und dort sprechen .
Oder mann erfindet eine gemeinsame Einheitssprache für die EUc, sowas wie Esperanto. Müsste dann aber überall in der Schule gelehrt werden.
Jedenfalls kein US-Englisch.
