Danielle Smith’s address was a chilling moment that recalls some of the ugliest anti-immigration chapters of our country’s history.

This is what demagogues do: pit the public against the most vulnerable and blame them for the very crises their austerity policies have created.

Immigrants aren't to blame for Alberta's crumbling healthcare system, overcrowded classrooms, and strained social services — Danielle Smith and the UCP are.

All federal leaders must come together to condemn Smith’s politics of division and stand up for the human rights of people who are our neighbours, friends and a part of our communities.

Imagine a public transit system so frequent and fast that getting to work is a pleasure, not a grind. A system so functional that we finally get masses of people shifting from cars to buses and trains. A system that allows working class folks to get around smoothly enough that they don’t think twice about going to a show downtown, or visiting family on the other side of town.

We can build a public transportation system that reconnects people and places across our vast land. A true nation-building project that serves rural communities abandoned by the market, creates thousands of new unionized positions for drivers, mechanics and maintenance workers. A workforce that is safe and stress-free on every route, operating electric vehicles built by fellow union members and using Canadian steel. To fight for it together, we will need to break free of the zero-sum thinking that austerity forces on us. Fare-free transit can’t come at the cost of existing services. More buses can’t be a reason to cut routes. We need more of everything - workers, vehicles, service and riders. The bold and inspiring vision of the kind of transit system Canadian workers deserve is central to building the excitement, broad coalition and political power we need to win this, together.

That’s why we’re fighting for fast, free and reliable public transit in every major Canadian city and connecting rural communities to urban centres with public, electric buses. -Legislation to decouple the Canadian Public Transit Fund from Carney’s Building Communities Strong Fund, making the fund more secure and forcing a debate if a future government decides to cut funding.

Every dollar invested in public transit creates $2.40 in total economic activity and generates an additional dollar in GDP through wages, taxes, and business spending. And each $1 million invested supports 15 jobs in construction, manufacturing, and technology development.
