This is the revolution in clean public transportation that our campaign is advocating for. It’s part of our Green New Deal, to build the renewable energy economy of the future, reduce our emissions and make life more affordable all at the same time.
To be clear: this is a transformational vision that will require generational federal investments and a major emphasis on public ownership. To fight for it together, we will need to break free of the zero-sum thinking that austerity forces on us. Fare-free transit can’t come at the cost of existing services. More buses can’t be a reason to cut routes. We need more of everything - workers, vehicles, service and riders. The bold and inspiring vision of the kind of transit system Canadian workers deserve is central to building the excitement, broad coalition and political power we need to win this, together.
That’s why we’re fighting for fast, free and reliable public transit in every major Canadian city and connecting rural communities to urban centres with public, electric buses. This historic operating system upgrade will be part of a government-wide Green New Deal, with new Crown Corporations, wealth and other corporate taxes, and a shift in the financial priorities of our society.
