Dear app developers, there are really great #fdroidapp from you in #fdroid and I would really like to give you a donation. But if all payment options are handled exclusively via #paypal, I won't. I also think that does not fit the concept of being an alternative to google&co.

People should be able to write software for Android, and distribute it outside Google's Play store, without having to:

* pay Google
* give government ID to Google
* agree to Google terms and conditions

People should be able to install the software they want on their phone, from sources other than Google's Play store, without having to jump through Google-imposed hoops.

e.g. via F-Droid.

We've got until September this year to stop Google squeezing the open Android ecosystem.

@neil
Hopefully this will give #FOSS devs an incentive to shift app development to #mobilelinux if Google pushes ahead with this.

There ARE alternatives. I'm fully aware that they are, for the most part, not prime time ready, but they DO exist, and they've come a long way.

Maybe Google doing this will be a blessing in disguise, as it may just be what's needed to give #linuxphones a push.

I, for one, will switch to one form of mobile Linux or another, if Obtainium/F-Droid/IzzyOnDroid are killed off by this.

I told you I had a virus on my laptop. 🦠

A silver laptop on a wooden desk displaying lines of code and error messages on the screen. A small white spiky toy shaped like a cartoon virus is placed on top of the keyboard. A Linux penguin sticker is visible on the bottom right corner of the laptop.

i made some small portable windows apps and put them up for free. CC0 - public domain, do whatever you want with them. No accounts, no telemetry, no installers.

- Core Cooldown - break timer
- Whisper Voice - local speech-to-text
- TypoGenie - Markdown to Word docs
- TutorialVault - video tutorial organizer
- OpenPylon - local Kanban board
- Vesper - distraction-free Markdown reader

Source on my self-hosted Gitea.

Screenshot of the lashmanApps website. Dark page with a deep teal-black gradient background. At the top, a small "APPS" label in a rounded border, followed by the title "lashmanApps" in large text where "lashman" is white and "Apps" is italic teal-blue. Below, the tagline "Focused, minimal, privacy-first software." and a badge reading "ALL APPS ARE FREE & CC0-LICENSED" in small caps.

Six app cards in a two-by-three grid. Each card has a dark glass-like background with rounded corners, an icon on the left, the app name in bold, and a short description.

Top row, left to right:
- Core Cooldown, teal coffee cup icon. "A mindful break timer for Windows."
- Whisper Voice, purple microphone icon. "Local speech recognition for Windows."
- TypoGenie, warm gold letter T icon. "Turn Markdown into professional Word docs."

Bottom row, left to right:
- TutorialVault, green play button icon. "Desktop video tutorial library manager."
- OpenPylon, teal tower/pylon icon. "A local-first Kanban board for Windows."
- Vesper, grey spiral/shell icon. "A distraction-free markdown reader for Windows."

Below these, a seventh card sits alone on the left reading "More coming soon" in green with "Stay tuned for new releases." and a plus icon.

At the bottom, "© 2026 lashman" in muted text, with two buttons: "Buy me a coffee" with a coffee cup icon, and "Support on Liberapay" with a heart icon.

«Open-source game engine Godot is drowning in 'AI slop' code contributions: 'I don't know how long we can keep it up'
Projects like @godotengine are being swamped by contributors who may not even understand the code they're submitting.»

The AI will still create security issues in general. Open-source software suffers from this because they are automatically exploited via AI.

While the rest are scrambling for alternatives to #Discord, Principia has been one step ahead, developing our own independent chat platform integrated into the community site.

...It is an extremely basic AJAX-based shoutbox type chat. Yet it is somehow up and competing with the day-to-day activity of our Discord server. I'm not sure how but I'm glad it is being used!
