"i am king of this forest & u will not pass" -- bossy antpitta

#Bird #Birding #Antbirds #Antpitta #Neotropics #Biodiversity #Photograph #BirdPhotography #Forest #Nature #Wildlife #WildlifeWednesday

A photograph of a dark, heavily overgrown corner of green forest where a small round brown bird with long legs stands on a horizontal branch with both wings lifted in what appears to be a gesture of aggression. This is the Muisca Antpitta of El Zoque, Colombia, and this is a somewhat misleading snapshot, since the birb is actually just hopping down with open wings to approach a nearby feeder -- no genuine aggression involved since birb was alone. But the posture tickled my funnybone because it makes the bird look so assertive. Nov 2025. Photo by Peachfront.

I miss these buggers nesting in literally anything. You left your boots outside for 24 hours? two nests. Newspaper mailbox? nest.

Here's some GREAT news: the first kākāpō chick in four years hatched on Valentine's Day! Kākāpō are nocturnal, flightless parrots that are endemic to New Zealand and are critically endangered. Only 236 adult kākāpō are alive today, so every chick is a milestone for the species!

Color movie "poster" for the new documentary "The Extraordinary Caterpillar"

TAKE A PEEK INTO THE DAZZLING WORLD OF NATURE’S TINIEST AND MIGHTIEST SUPERHEROES!
A FILM BY JEFF McKAY

FEATURING:
SAM JAFFE AND THE CATERPILLAR LAB, DOUG TALLAMY, AND DAVID WAGNER

"Over 98% of the living world on Earth is smaller than a bee. Yet humans view the planet as a world centered around themselves. Landscapes are deconstructed to suit human needs, often with little regard for the natural systems that sustain the food web. The Extraordinary Caterpillar follows the scientists and community activists with this peek into the dazzling world of nature’s tiniest superheroes."

Feathered Flame

Here is a northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) looking like a superhero flashing through the branches.

If you’re captivated by northern cardinals and other members of the Cardinalidae family—better known as the cardinal family—step into my photo gallery for a visual feast. Come take a look:

"A northern cardinal hangs in the air in a moment so brief it feels almost borrowed from time. The bird is captured mid‑flight, wings flung wide, every feather splayed like individual strokes of red flame. Its body leans forward with purpose, the crest sharp, the beak bright, the eye fixed on its destination. The cardinal’s red plumage glows against the softly blurred background, making it appear as though the bird is lit from within.

A bare branch cuts across the foreground, giving context to the scene—a perch just left behind or one about to be claimed again. The background melts into gentle browns and greens, a soft wash of color that makes the cardinal’s motion feel even more dramatic. The whole image carries the sensation of movement suspended: the rush of wings, the tension of flight, the vivid presence of a bird that refuses to be anything but seen." - Microsoft Copilot
