Purple hyacinth orchid (Dipodium punctatum) at Mystery Bay, NSW. Only one plant out and only just starting to flower in late February near the ocean. I usually see this species flowering nearby from late November - this is probably the latest flowering I have seen (although it can apparently flower into March at some locations).

"i am king of this forest & u will not pass" -- bossy antpitta

#Bird #Birding #Antbirds #Antpitta #Neotropics #Biodiversity #Photograph #BirdPhotography #Forest #Nature #Wildlife #WildlifeWednesday

A photograph of a dark, heavily overgrown corner of green forest where a small round brown bird with long legs stands on a horizontal branch with both wings lifted in what appears to be a gesture of aggression. This is the Muisca Antpitta of El Zoque, Colombia, and this is a somewhat misleading snapshot, since the birb is actually just hopping down with open wings to approach a nearby feeder -- no genuine aggression involved since birb was alone. But the posture tickled my funnybone because it makes the bird look so assertive. Nov 2025. Photo by Peachfront.

Gary Tabor’s career traces a shift in conservation from isolated “island” parks to vast, connected ecological networks.

Shaped by time in the Adirondacks and East Africa, he argues wildlife survival depends on the “connective tissue” between protected areas.

Through the Center for Large Landscape Conservation, he brought connectivity into the mainstream, advancing wildlife crossings and community-led solutions.

TAKE A PEEK INTO THE DAZZLING WORLD OF NATURE’S TINIEST AND MIGHTIEST SUPERHEROES!
A FILM BY JEFF McKAY

FEATURING:
SAM JAFFE AND THE CATERPILLAR LAB, DOUG TALLAMY, AND DAVID WAGNER

"Over 98% of the living world on Earth is smaller than a bee. Yet humans view the planet as a world centered around themselves. Landscapes are deconstructed to suit human needs, often with little regard for the natural systems that sustain the food web. The Extraordinary Caterpillar follows the scientists and community activists with this peek into the dazzling world of nature’s tiniest superheroes."

‘Overall, technological advances were rated highest and non-violent civil disobedience lowest.

#Economists rated market-based solutions and technological advances higher than environmental researchers.

#Environmental researchers rated degrowth of the global economy and non-violent civil disobedience higher than economists.’

‘If #climatechange is the only relevant issue you see, it’s easier to put your faith in cleaner tech and market incentives.

If you also see #biodiversity loss, chemical pollution and land system change as problems, it no longer looks like an engineering issue.

It starts to look like lots of connected pressures that need changes in how we produce, consume and organise the economy.’

We need scientists to collaborate more with economists and interdisciplinary research funding to enable this.

Biophobia: people’s aversion to nature

"Evidence suggests that biophobia is a growing trend in many parts of the world. Ironically, this trend has emerged during a time when increasing people’s biophilia has become a critical challenge for ensuring the sustainability of the human relationship with nature. As highlighted in this review, biophobia can harm public health and undermine conservation, but lacks unified research. Although foundational theories and concepts have been established, a deeper and interdisciplinary understanding of the manifestations, drivers, and feedback loops associated with the human aversion to nature is urgent." >>
