We see Tree Sparrows for basically one day as they migrate to nearby nesting sites to the east. They swoop in (early April), check out a few sites, then they are gone. Looking through my library, I have mostly blur. This is the only shot that I could work with. 500mm at great distance, so highly cropped. There were 5 birds in flight around this one.

Gorgeous birds that feed mostly on insects (on the fly), but will eat a little fruit and egg shells. They will use nesting boxes near water.

Starting the Swallows (Family Hirundinidae) today. 6 Genera and 8 species in North America. 21 Genera and 92 species Worldwide. These are insectivores who hunt on the fly - and they are FAST,

Vocal, Active, Acrobatic. Three words that nicely capture the Tufted Titmouse. Sadly, the last of the Paridae that I have in my photo Library. These are lowland birds, that are common in the eastern half of US. Fun to watch and work with as you hike around the trails in the woods. They will follow along, talking to you as they forage for food - mostly insects (amazing to see them take on a spider) but will also eat nuts and seed. Common in our area, and a common visitor to our feeders.

Volunteer workday today. Not sure what we will be doing so will load up most of the tools. Tuesday nearly finished me off, so hopefully something a little lighter today.

Ambling in the woods nearby, one of the common voices in this region is that of the Carolina Chickadee. A year-round occupant, easily identifiable, gregarious, and beautiful. They lecture me when the feeders in the back yard need attention and sing to hikers along the trails. Masters of survival under the most brutal conditions, they can find food under the worst circumstances. Members of the Paridae Family that worldwide include 13 Genera and 62 species (Birds of the World). Four Genra and 14 species inhabit North America. These are birds of many faces.

Still working through the Passeriformes, the largest of the Orders. Much to learn. Here going from the largest (Raven) to one of the smallest (Brown Creeper). The Brown Creeper is a singleton in North America. It is small (~13 cm long) and very well camouflaged, so it can be tough to see. One of our common winter birds - people celebrate the arrival of Brown Creepers As the name suggests they creep along tree trunks searching for food - creeping to the top, then flying to the base of the next tree. Wonderful to watch.

If I were too close, the owl would be hunkering down staring at the camera or would have dived into its burrow.
